YSS does not try to provide a unified service, it is a project-based organisation. Each project has similar or overlapping aims and objectives. Projects are funded separately and are often branded by their project name rather than a corporate YSS brand. However, all projects are delivered in a way that reflects the overall YSS aims and values. In addition, many staff and volunteers work across several projects at a time and this creates added value in terms of sharing information, knowledge and best practice.
Projects often have their own local multi-agency steering groups to ensure they truly reflect local needs. YSS believes in partnership working that involves other voluntary and community organisations, local and national government agencies, social enterprises, the private sector and young people who access our services.
YSS is a medium sized regional based charity, currently managing income of around £2 million annually. We have the ability to work at district level, county and regional levels and are involved in national fora for criminal justice, volunteer work and rural youth affairs. However, we are very much in touch with our roots and always try to ‘keep it real’.
Challenge ahead
The challenge ahead for YSS is to maintain diversity of provision and to ensure we continue to establish ourselves as an organisation that people wish to invest in.
We need to maintain our independence and continue to develop our voice so we can influence policy and practice across all sectors to ensure young people reach their potential in society.
