The ‘Crafty Crafters’, a group of four creative women in Worcestershire, recently donated a whopping £800 to YSS in support of young carers in Worcestershire.

The craft-loving group raised the money by making and selling Christmas themed handicrafts at various events including Finstall Village Produce Show, Bournheath Craft Show, Princess of Wales Hospital in Bromsgrove and Julia’s Beauty Room, Bromsgrove. The group’s crafty creations included Christmas bunting, angels, clowns, reindeer, hearts, baubles, cards, gift tags and wall-hangings.

Barbara Turner, a member of Crafty Crafters, said: “After marking various items for a WI craft fair, four of us, namely Jenny Billingham, Susan Jones, Ann Darlow and myself decided to carry on making by meeting regularly to keep brains and fingers working, with the addition of a chat and a cuppa!

“To date we’ve raised £1,900 for a variety of charities and we’re delighted to be supporting Worcestershire Young Carers and hope that this donation goes a long way in helping to give young carers the opportunity to have some fun and enjoy a break from their caring responsibilities.”

YSS, a charity working across the whole of West Mercia to support some of the most marginalised people in society, has successfully delivered Worcestershire Young Carers since 2003. As well as providing assessments, signposting and one to one support, Worcestershire Young Carers delivers monthly clubs and regular activities for young people with a caring role at home, aged between seven and 17, with support from donations.

Neil Phillips, Senior Keyworker at Worcestershire Young Carers, said: “We are thrilled to receive such a brilliant donation from everyone at the Crafty Crafters. The money will be used to pay for young carers from Redditch and Bromsgrove to join our Easter and summer activities, including a trip to Tamworth Snowdome, horse riding and a drama workshop at Malvern Theatres.”

Lorraine Preece, Chief Executive at YSS, said: “On behalf of everyone at YSS I’d like to extend huge thanks to the Crafty Crafters for helping to fund activities for young carers, which are so important in giving young carers the chance to take a break from their caring roles, socialise with their peers and have some fun.”
