A new programme targeted at supporting young people to get involved in social action has launched at YSS (Your Support Service).

January saw the launch of the Worcestershire Young Carers ‘Young Carer Ambassador Programme’, a new project enabling 10-18 years olds to get involved in social action. Up to 60 young people will be offered a place on one of four performing arts workshops throughout the year that will focus on improving communication, public speaking and presentation skills, and ultimately support young people to develop the skills that employers look for.

The concept of social action involves activities like campaigning, fundraising and volunteering, all of which enable participants to make a positive difference to their communities.

Jon Cawdron, YSS Worcestershire Young Carers Senior Project Coordinator, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this exciting new programme to our young carers, and hope to encourage a significant number of young people to become Young Carer Ambassadors following involvement in one of the workshops. This role will see them co-deliver assemblies at their schools alongside Worcestershire Young Carers Education Link Worker, David King, and will provide the opportunity to share their story with other young people whilst practicing the skills they have learned in public speaking, presentation and communication. The assemblies aim to educate schools on what it means to be a young carer and help to identify new young carers who are not currently receiving support from the service.”

The Young Carer Ambassador role will be individual to each young person who undertakes it. They will tell their own story and put forward what being a young carer means to them. Both the training and the ambassador role will help young people gain the skills to move on to further volunteering and have the confidence to undertake interviews for colleges and jobs.

The Young Carers Ambassador Programme has been funded by #iwill2018, a UK-wide campaign aiming to get six out of ten young people involved in social action by 2020.
