Statement on re-nationalisation of Probation Service YSS welcomes yesterday’s government announcement for the re-nationalisation of the Probation Service. The charity has been campaigning for a re-unification of the probation service for the last two years and gave evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee in February 2018. Catherine Kevis, Chief Executive, said: “We welcome this news which is good for service users and good for public safety. Having a single accountable agency for the rehabilitation and resettlement of people coming out of prison makes sense and will help to reduce the rate of re-offending and therefore the number of victims of crime. People who have committed offences deserve a second chance and we’re hopeful that the new regime will increase this chance. We will be holding discussions with our colleagues at People Plus, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and Public Health whose working approach is aligned with ours and who, as partners, support us to effect local change and opportunities. YSS delivers Through the Gate and mentoring rehabilitation services throughout West Mercia in partnership with People Plus, the local Community Rehabilitation Company.
