A Worcester man is set to tackle this year’s London Marathon in support of young carers in Worcestershire.

James Yelland, aged 28 from Worcester, has decided to run the 26.2 mile race to raise money for YSS, a charity with its head office in Blackpole, Worcester, which works to support some of the most marginalised people across the whole of West Mercia, including seven to 25 year olds in Worcestershire who are acting as young carers.

James, who works as a buyer for Intersport UK in Solihull, decided to raise money for Worcestershire Young Carers, a service successfully delivered by YSS since 2003, after learning more about the difference donations can make to young carers from YSS Chief Executive Lorraine Preece.

He said: "Lorraine is my Aunt and told me all about the work the charity does to support the 400 plus young carers they have registered in Worcestershire. I was really inspired to raise money, and was surprised to learn that according to the 2011 census, more than 3,000 young people were identified as having a caring role in Worcestershire. I really want to do what I can to help, and having got a place to run in the London Marathon, decided to raise money for YSS. I’m a keen runner so I’m really looking forward to the race – I’m hoping to complete it within three and a half hours and to beat my fundraising goal of £650. Any donations would be hugely appreciated!"

As well as assessments, one to one support and signposting, Worcestershire Young Carers also runs monthly clubs and organises regular activities for young carers to take part in, ranging from horse riding to visiting the theatre.

Lorraine Preece, Chief Executive at YSS, said: "I’m thrilled James has decided to raise money for YSS.

"The money he raises will be used to take a group of young carers on a day trip to the seaside this summer, giving them a break from their caring roles as they play cricket on the beach, have fish and chips on the seafront and enjoy ice cream.

"Worcestershire Young Carers supports more than 400 young carers every year, and activities like this are so important in giving these young people a well-deserved break, as well as the chance to socialise with their peers and have some fun."

To help James reach his total, please sponsor him to run the London Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 22 April, by donating to his fundraising page here. To find out more about Worcestershire Young Carers go to yss.org.uk/worcestershire-young-carers.
