Staff at YSS recently held a two day interactive volunteer mentor and induction training course, to support volunteers in their roles with the charity.

YSS Operations Director, Debb Grantham, and Senior Project Coordinator, Jessica Whitfield, organised and delivered the two day event which took place at Meeting Point House in Telford.

Eight delegates from Shropshire, Telford and Worcestershire took part in a variety of interactive sessions, learning more about YSS, its services and service users.

On the second day, volunteers were introduced to the keyworkers involved in the services and heard first-hand what challenges service users faced and how volunteer mentors were integral to the support YSS provided.

A volunteer who attended the training event commented: “The whole event was so informative! I never felt embarrassed to ask questions and it really told me everything I needed to know. Debb and Jess were really friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. The course was fun whilst still remaining interesting, and meeting the YSS keyworker was extremely useful… I can’t wait to tell everyone about it!”

YSS recruits and supports a number of volunteers across the wide range of services it delivers. Lorraine Preece, YSS Chief Executive, said: “Volunteers and the ethos and values that volunteering brings to YSS are hugely important to us. We aim to provide the highest standards of training and support to the volunteers that work alongside YSS, and value the extra dimension and diversity they bring to our work. It is wonderful to be able to hold training events such as these, and I am delighted to hear such positive feedback from the two day course.”

Currently YSS has around 120 volunteers involved in a range of different roles within the organisation, from supporting young carers, to supporting young people in custody as an Appropriate Adult, or providing support to people in prison as a Volunteer Mentor.

As well as providing a valuable service to our service users, volunteering can open doors to employment by helping to build skills and experience, give a sense of worth and be a way of meeting like-minded and motivated people.
